Emotional/Behavioural Disorder

( Also known as EBD)

Emotional/Behavioural disorder is an emotional disturbance.

There are some factors that can contribute to some predisposition in children and adolescents: Biological factors (hereditary factors, brain injury, parental exposure to drugs or alcohol, physical illness or injury), home environment (stress, poor role model parents, violence, inconsistent rules or expectations), and school (negative environment in classroom, inconsistent rules, cultural differences).

There are many problems associated with these disorders, including anxiety, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Many students may also have ADHD or learning exceptionalities.

There are many different subgroups of students with EBD: Students who have conduct disorder, some that exhibit socialized aggression, some students have attention problems and/or immaturity, some have anxiety/withdrawal, others display psychotic behaviour and some are hyperactive.

Some of these children struggle for years if they are not supported or understood. It is very important to detect and identify any signs of emotional or behavioural problems and treat them so these children can have successful and happy lives.

There are various initiatives to help awareness about mental health:

  • Stamp out the stigma

  • Bell let’s talk
